Winter Beauty | Best Body Creams for Dry Skin

By  |  0 Comments

If you’re anything like me, and your skin gets SUPER dry during winter, listen up. It is literally my life’s mission to find a body cream that a) doesn’t freak my skin out b) hydrates my skin and keeps it hydrated for 12 hours and beyond and c) is luxurious and smells beautiful.

I have learnt that my skin doesn’t do well with petroleum or liquid paraffin (which are found in a ton of body lotions). My skin goes red, sometimes bumpy and just doesn’t play nice. In an attempt to ward of the dry-skin blues, I ordered 4 creams from my favourite eco-beauty online store, Faithful to Nature. I ordered the Hey Gorgeous Whipped Coconut Body Soufflé, Bee Natural’s Luxurious Body Butter in Rose, oh-lief’s Natural Aqueous Cream and Nautica’s Unrefined Shea Butter. I also bought out my Africology Pineapple and Coconut Body Balm and Lush Ro’s Body Conditioner as part of the line up. Here are my thoughts …

Hey Gorgeous Whipped Coconut Body Soufflé

winter skin 6.2

What it claims

“Give your skin a taste of the tropics, with this delicious-smelling buttery body soufflé from Hey Gorgeous. This coconut-based body cream is whipped into a thick, smooth and ultra-rich formula that your skin will simply soak up, leaving you with that perfectly pampered feeling only Mother Nature can provide. Made with coconut oil and coconut milk, in a base of whipped shea butter, this Hey Gorgeous body soufflé will keep your skin looking youthful and healthy, with a gorgeous natural glow… not to mention a divine natural coconut fragrance.

  • No artificial fragrances or colours
  • No parabens or phthalates
  • No preservatives
  • Moisturises & protects
  • Reduces the signs of ageing

The superstar ingredient: Coconut oil has a unique fatty acid profile; it’s extremely rich in medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which are ultra-nourishing for your skin while also being antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.

With coconut oil, your skin is protected against dryness, itching and inflammation, as well as the microbes that cause skin irritations and imbalances. Coconut oil won’t disrupt your skin’s natural pH balance; it’s a super-gentle alternative to ordinary chemical-laden moisturisers.

Other ingredients:

  • Coconut milk is also packed full of nourishing MCFAs like lauric acid
  • Arrowroot powder soothes skin irritation
  • Sweet almond oil moisturises & brightens the skin
  • Jojoba oil is a nutrient-rich plant wax that slows the signs of ageing

I used this after a shower (as I do with all other creams). Some people use cream twice a day, but I don’t have time for that I’m too lazy. Plus I think it’s gross to apply cream if you haven’t showered, and I shower once a a day. Anyhow, this is what I think…

PACKAGING

It comes in a cute plastic tub, with Hey Gorgeous labeling.

SMELL

It smells vaguely like coconut, and I wish it would pack more of a coconutty punch. It’s kinda bland, but I’m okay with that because of the fact that there is no added synthetic fragrance.

CONSISTENCY

It has a lovely, whipped texture and is snow white.

PERFORMANCE

I’m giving this one a 2/5 because I didn’t find it impressive at all in the hydration department. By the next day already my crocodile skin (eeuw) started to appear. I had higher hopes for this body soufflé, having read the product description.

Bee Natural Luxurious Body Butter (Rose)

winter skin 5

What it claims

“This extension of Bee Natural’s Head to Toe Healing Balm has been adapted and softened for extensive use as a creamy, rich body butter. The addition of Rose Absolute essential oils have been added to the base mixture of beeswax, avocado oil, sunflower oil and raw honey. Lemongrass essential oil will soothe your skin. Beeswax, being a natural hydrating agent will increase and retain the natural moisture in dry skin. Avocado oil, laden in vitamin E, is a potent aid in reducing stretch marks and scars. Bee Natural’s Body Butter is essential to a glowing, healthy skin.”

PACKAGING

This body butter comes in a glass jar with a gold lid. I much prefer glass to plastic (but it has its pros and cons when you travel).

SMELL

Oh man, this stuff smells wonderful! It can be a bit borderline granny if you aren’t into roses, but I think it smells divine. It gives me that luxurious, opulent feeling that I want in winter. It can be a bit overpowering at times, depending on how sensitive your sense of smell is. It literally makes my PJ’s smell like roses.

CONSISTENCY

It is beautiful and balmy, and melts in your hand. It applies like a dream. It’s a little bit tougher to apply than cream because it is more dense. But it’s delicious.

PERFORMANCE

This balm gets a 5/5. No flakiness, just happy skin.

P.S. If you don’t like the rose scent, they have many other variants including Vanilla & Cinnamon, Neroli, Lemongrass, Lavender, Jasmin and Geranium.

oh-lief Natural Aqueous Cream

winter skin 7

What it claims

This amazing skincare product is the first of its kind in South Africa; an aqueous cream for newborn babies that contains no petroleum jellies or mineral oils! Instead, Oh-Lief has combined some of Mother Nature’s most special healing remedies (like beeswax, natural clay and coconut oil) to take care of your precious angel’s sensitive skin. Use it as a wash-off cream for newborn babies, and as an all-purpose lotion for the whole family.”

As with all these butters, balms, soufflés and creams, I used this fresh out of the shower.

PACKAGING

A white plastic tub with a yellow oh-lief label houses this cream.

SMELL

The cream doesn’t smell like anything, and even thought it doesn’t smell bad in any way, I didn’t like it so I added some organic orange essential oil.

CONSISTENCY

It has a different consistency to that of aqueous cream – instead of fluffy white body cream you will find beige cream. Incidentally, the beige colour is from the Shea Butter (Shea Butter in its natural form is quite boring). Once I added the orange oil (my mom actually did, so, thanks Mom!) I was much more eager to interact with it. If you aren’t too fussy, you won’t mind the lack of smell. I also realize that it wouldn’t be an aqueous cream if it hinted of strawberrries or geranium, so I can deal.

PERFORMANCE

In spite of the beigeness, I’m rating this cream a solid 4/5. My skin seems happy with this formula, with no weirdness in sight. I did the 12 hour test and guess what? My skin was still hydrated with no flakiness for miles. Aqueous cream 1 : Crocodile skin 0.

winter skin 8

  • A wonderful natural antioxidant, it helps reduce the signs of ageing
  • A truly superior moisturiser

  • Minimises stretch marks
  • Helps heal cuts and burns
  • Can be used on razor bumps and rashes
  • Ideal for cracked, dry skin
  • Mix with conditioner for a nourishing hair treatment
  • Has a shelf life of 2 years

PACKAGING

This shea butter comes in a very plain plastic tub, with what looks like a PC printed label, nothing fancy.

SMELL

Shea Butter is seriously snooze-worthy in it’s raw form, and smells straight up gross. Don’t get confused with cocoa butter here. I struggle to use this as a moisturiser without adding some essential oil. The problem is that unlike aqueous cream that you can mix and stir, Shea Butter is solid. In other words, no mixing possible. It has a weird smell, and if used alone, it literally smells like I’ve been standing in the middle of a veld fire for an hour. Smokey smelling skin is not a turn on. For me or anyone else.

CONSISTENCY

It’s thick and solid and a little grainy. You have to dig to get a little bit and then melt it in your hands.

PERFORMANCE

I love the fact that it can be used as a hair mask and some people swear that it has lessened their scars. In spite of its moisturising properties, and the fact that it is priced really well, it smells SO bad (the smell it gives your skin is repulsive and disgusting) so I’m giving it a 1/5 and also because it’s too much of a mission to use. It’s too thick, and that’s a lot coming from me with my super dry skin. I can’t actually use it as it makes me want to vomit.

Africology Pineapple & Coconut Body Balm

winter skin 3

What it claims

A tropical blend that connects the mind with the ocean and its inherently soothing properties. Each body balm works to uplift the mind and balance the body through the powerful effects of essential oils.”

PACKAGING

It comes in a little brown jar, which I love. It feels old world and is small enough to travel with. (The only size available is 125 ml)

SMELL

This balm smells beautiful and tropical, and makes you feel warm and festive. I don’t know so much about the part of connecting my mind with the ocean and its inherently soothing properties but hey, it did make me feel like sipping pinã coladas on a beach somewhere.

CONSISTENCY

It is beautiful and balmy, and melts in your hand and applies like a dream. It is a bit tougher to apply than cream because it is more dense, but its delicious.

PERFORMANCE

This balm gets a 5/5. No flakiness, just happy skin.

Lush Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner

Winter skin 1

What it claims

A beautiful, rose jam scented body conditioner that’s full of the most emollient, moisturising ingredients possible to feed and nourish the skin. There’s cypress oil, capuacu butter, Brazil nut oil, cocoa butter, shea butter and super softening almond oil, along with Argan oil of course, which is rich in vitamin E and incredibly moisturising and soothing on the skin. There’s also a touch of spring water to cool the skin down. The 20% glycerine locks in all this moisture, leaving your skin soft, smooth, supple and the fragrance leaves you delicately scented like a rose bush being kissed by the first rays of morning sun.”

PACKAGING

The body conditioner comes in a cool little signature black tub.

SMELL

I love the way this smells. It smells like roses but then on the dry down almost smells like baby lotion. The smell also stays with you, and most mornings when I wake up, I can still get a hint of the lingering scent.

CONSISTENCY

This conditioner is thick and lush and so creamy and dreamy. I love it! It can either be used as an in-shower moisturiser where you apply it and then wash it off before stepping out or as a regular moisturiser.

PERFORMANCE

I’m giving this a 4/5 because it does the job nicely (I just don’t like the fact that it contains glycerine) but for some reason, I don’t use it as often as I should. Weird.
