How To Get the Perfect Red Lip

Are you dying to rock a ruby red mouth but are afraid? The main concerns around wearing red lipstick for most women are worries that the colour might bleed, lips looking dry and flaky or looking silly courtesy of red tooth splotches. Fear not! The next 5 steps will  help you achieve the perfect red pout sans these three terrible consequences.

The first step is crucial, because we want  a smooth base to work on. If you have any loose bits of skin, exfoliate your lips. You can do this by gently scrubbing your lips with a mixture of sugar and lip balm, or your toothbrush. After exfoliation, apply your favourite lip balm thoroughly, and then dab off the extra with a tissue. I use Maybelline Baby Lips in Intense Care.

If you want your lipstick to stay put, this step will help you achieve that. Apply a thin layer of concealer or foundation to your lips. This also helps the true colour of the lipstick shine through.

Use lip liner to outline your lips. At your cupid’s bow go in with short strokes to ensure accuracy. Then fill your lips in with lip liner. This helps the lipstick stay in place. I absolutely love MAC’s lip liner in Cherry. There isn’t a prettier red out there!

Apply your favourite red lipstick, starting at the centre of the lips and working outward to the sides. For extra control, use a lipstick brush to fill in your lips. The lipstick tube can feel quite clumsy and not built for precision if you’re a beginner.

Once your lips are all rubied up, press your lips together. If you want a bolder look, finish by blotting with a tissue and then apply a second coat.

Made a mistake that needs cleaning up? No sweat! Grab an earbud and wipe the colour away. Next, use a lipstick brush or a stiff eye shadow brush to gently apply some concealer to the edge of your mouth. Take your time to feather the concealer out to create a clean line. If the line still looks too obvious, blend the remaining concealer with your fingers. Et voilà! The perfect pout!

Remember that practice makes perfect, so don’t be put off if you don’t nail it first time round. I can’t wait to see you all rocking perfect red lips!
