Rubybox: Yay or Nay?
Last year, while I was at her office, my friend happened to take delivery of her Rubybox. She seemed really excited and who wouldn’t be? A box of mystery cosmetics, supposedly chosen for you based on your skin tone, skin type, hair colour and beauty preferences, delivered to your door step, sounds like the best idea ever. I was intrigued by the Rubybox idea and decided to sign up for a 6 month subscription.
What a total waste of time and money. [*I don’t like to be a negative Nancy, but if I feel that if something is dismally disappointing, it’s my duty to let you know.*]
To sign up to Rubybox you need to fill out a beauty profile, detailing your average monthly beauty spend, your hair type and colour, eye colour, skin tone and type, which is quite exciting because you think that you will be sent products based on these criteria. How wrong I was to think that, and how disappointed I was. My friend – who coincidentally has black curly hair and a darker skin – and I – I have light skin and straight hair – received exactly the same products FOR TWO MONTHS! I e-mailed Rubybox to get some clarification as to the contents of the boxes, but after three weeks of waiting, I still haven’t received a reply.
In addition to the generic products that they probably send to their entire database of customers, the stuff that they send isn’t even exciting. I’m so uninspired to write this post, because that’s what the Rubybox is – dull and uninspiring. Have a look for yourself…
The December Box

A packet of Nair hair removal cream | A Dove hair mask | An orange Rubybox lip crayon (I love orange but never wear it) | Emanuel Ungaro body lotion | A sample of Jeannie D’s new fragrance, Jeannie in a Bottle
The January Box

I can’t even deal with this Rubybox. At least I was able to use the hair mask from the December box, but this box, I have no words.
2 hair bands (the other one was silver and my nephew wanted it so he got it) | Ferragamo shampoo | Babor samples | Rubybox’s Delirium | A laser hair removal voucher to the value of R550
Suffice it to say that I cancelled my subscription after 2 months, and unless the products improve drastically, don’t see myself ever signing up again.
On the positive side, Rubybox carry a wide and wonderful range of makeup and products and I still order a lot of my beauty products from them. This is because a) they’re slightly cheaper than some retailers, b) I don’t have to go to a mall, c) ordering is easy and d) my goods are delivered in a timely manner. They also have amazing specials from time to time, which are well-worth snapping up. So yay for that!
