Plum Crazy | All About Reds

In winter we crave warmer, richer experiences including food, environments and colours to compensate for the freezing cold. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel colder and not my best when I wear pastels in winter and instead find myself reaching for bold, stronger colours. Does anyone else experience that? My favourite colours for winter include all the deep jewel tones, especially dark emerald green, plum, purple and navy. Those colours make me feel cosy, comfortable and warm. To get you in the mood, I’ve rounded up my favourite plum beauty products.

REACT by Morgan Taylor consists of a base coat and a top coat that bonds with nail lacquer to extend the wear of your nail polish for up to 10 days of wear. The formula is infused with Gelish to give  shine and wear, without having to go for a gel mani. What I absolutely adore about this product is that it claims to be dry to the touch in 8 minutes and it is! I managed to apply the Base Coat, a coat of Prettier in Pink and the Top Coat  and my nails were dry in a flash! Usually I find base and top coats such a drag because as soon as you’ve finished painting your nails, you touch something and your mani is ruined. With REACT, I could actually feel the coats drying, by way of a cooling sensation. As for wear, regular nail polish lasts 2 days on me. That’s why I hardly ever use it. This time around, the fuchsia colour on my nails lasted for 4 which completely chip free, which is a win. It seems to be lasting better on other people, so maybe my nails are just nail polish haters? REACT says “We just made every lacquer you own better”. And I think they have. I’m 100% certain that it will work with any non Morgan Taylor nail polish too.

The REACT base and top coats are available for a RRSP of  R184 each at Dischem and other select retailers

Bon Bon by Viktor & Rolf is a sticky confection of a fragrance, with caramel and toffee being the most dominant scent. Mandarin, jasmine and peach make an appearance somewhere along the unraveling of the notes, but the overall effect is that of sweet, sugary caramel. It’s a really interesting fragrance. When it’s first sprayed on the skin, you get a rush of sweet caramel, which is the key note. This tones down quickly to let the subtler notes of mandarin, orange and peach through. There’s also orange blossom and jasmine to provide depth and the floral note that is now associated with the brand (à la Flowerbomb). Base notes of cedar, sandalwood, guaiac wood and amber give the fragrance a heady scent and very slight sharpness that are really pleasing and contrast they key note’s sweetness.

The RRSP is R920 for 30ml, R1 170 for 50ml, R1 490 for 90ml

Tweezerman Smooth Finish Facial Hair Remover might be an option for you if you have facial hair that you wish would go away, and you want to be able to remove it in the comfort of your own home. It claims to remove even the finest unwanted hair quickly, easily, and from the root to slow and minimize regrowth. It’s also safer than waxing or chemicals. How to use it? You lay the flat edge near your skin and then rotate the handles inwards so that hairs get caught in the spring and are then pulled out. I am obsessed with facial hair, and even if I see a tiny hair I want it off. This tool didn’t work so well for me, because it didn’t remove the finest unwanted hair part. I tried it on my mom and it worked a little better on her. It comes with a free pair of tweezers, but at R470, it’s a little steep. If it works for you, R470 will be a great deal. Think of all those waxing/threading appointments you won’t have to go to anymore!

Morgan Taylor Winter Garden What’s Your Pointsettia? is a deep red shimmer creme, really pretty for winter occasions and for adding a little glam to your look.

L’Oréal Infallible Mega Gloss in (407) Smoke Me Up  is a beautiful, non-tacky, matte lipgloss that wears comfortably and smells yummy! The formula is enriched with hyaluronic acid and shine pigments, and my lips are never left dry. The applicator is very interesting – it’s contorted and curved to perfectly fit into the contours of your lips. L’Oreal calls it a lip shaper applicator as it contours and hugs the lips for easy application. It is a beautiful pink/plum/red hyrbid and leaves a stain behind even when it comes off. It survived on my lips for just over 4 hours with in between eating and drinking and it didn’t bleed (yay!). Because it’s a soft finish lip gloss, it doesn’t settle into fine lines or dry and set on lips. Apply sparingly, because it can get on your teeth.

Available for R140 at Dis-Chem, Clicks, Foschini and all other stores that stock L’Oreal

L’Oréal Infallible Matte Max Lip Colours in 004 Oops I Pink It Again is a gorgeous pink colour (which comes out slightly more plum on lips) courtesy of a unique gel-to-powder formula. It gives a soft yet pigmented matte finish via its sponge applicator and almost feels like eyeshadow on your lips! It also feels like you’re wearing nothing at all. The formula can be a bit drying, so be sure to moisturise your lips when you can. I always apply a thin coat of DCT or Mint Babylips beforehand, and luckily, these layer nicely over lip balm without changing the matte finish. They give an intense velvety glow of colour, are really easy to wear and have staying power.

Available at Dis-Chem, Clicks and other retailers for a RRSP of R169

Elegant Touch Express 3 Minute Manicure nails in Garnet give a quick hit of polish if your nails are undone and you have an event to attend or you want to change up your look. These nails are supremely pretty, and they make your hands look immaculate. The only down side is that if you apply them incorrectly (which I seemed to have done, but don’t ask me how) you are left with a little gap between your cuticle and the nail, as in the nail doesn’t sit flush with your cuticle. I have a feeling it’s because of the size of the gel glue glob under the nail. I wouldn’t care at all about this gap at all, as it doesn’t look odd at all. The reason I care is because it’s painful! If you run your hands through your hair (which I wasn’t aware I do a lot, but I am now) individual strands of hair get caught in that gap and then are swiftly ripped out of your scalp. I’ve lost about 40 strands because it’s something I do unconsciously. So either wear these nails for a special occasion and that’s that, or just don’t run your fingers through your hair while you have them on. I’m trying to remember this, but every so often I catch my fingers on my hair and then it hurts and then I curse. I wore them for 5 days and couldn’t take it anymore so yanked them off. The PLUS side with these nails is because of the flexible gel glue on the underside, they kind of move (which is weird) if you exert pressure onto them, including an every day activity like flipping open a lid of a tube. Why this is a plus is because the nails don’t get worn down on the tip or look worn and manky, which I’ve experienced with some other press on nails. Another plus is the fact that they come off easily. I just pulled them off. It’s kinda sore and it feels for 3 seconds that your real nail will be pulled off with the fake nail, but rest assured that it doesn’t happen and you don’t do any damage to your nails. These nails couldn’t be any easier to use – I think it took me 3 minutes in total to select the best size for each of my nails and then apply.
