My Current Obsession | Pink Lip Glosses

In spite of my love of neutral colours when it comes to fashion, pink is my all time favourite colour. It’s pretty, flirty, girly and, in the right shade, can be sophisticated. It can be bold in bright neon or flashy fuchsia, and it can be subtle in bubblegum and pastel shades. It’s my go-to shade for lips and I find it the easiest colour on most days. I used to have all sorts of lipstick shades in one makeup bag, but because my pink lip products vastly outweigh the number of reds and purples, I got myself a pink lipstick bag and filled it with pink lippies to eliminate confusion. Now I know exactly where to find my pink MAC St Germaine. I’m all about streamlining. Is my A type personality showing?

Today I’m reviewing two gorgeous pink lip glosses from NYX and MAC.

Marvelush, although insanely pretty (lavender and cool based pinks are my absolute fav and they work well with my skin tone) just doesn’t perform. It goes on well, but then soon settles into lip creases. It’s quite tacky (but not crazy level tacky like some of MAC’s other lipglasses), and creates horrible white marks in the corner of your mouth that are super gross. You know which marks I’m talking about? It also made my lips peel after 2 days of wearing it, which isn’t ideal. The coverage is on the sheer side, but you can build it up to more of a milky finish. It smells amazing, like sweet vanilla.

All in all, I like this gloss, but ONLY for the perfect shade of pink that it is. I definitely wouldn’t repurchase or recommend any other colours in this line. I wonder why MAC can’t get their lipgloss formulations perfect, since they’re one of the biggest cosmetic houses out there?

This is pure heaven. From the moment I applied this to my lips, I was smitten. Merengue is a cool lavender pink (but darker than Marvelush) and provides an opaque finish. The formula is creamy and highly pigmented and gives a shiny-but-not-too-shiny effect. It is the perfect amount  of tacky, which is not too tacky at all, but tacky enough to fulfill its purpose as a lip gloss. It feels so comfortable on my lips and it has amazing staying power! If I apply it at 9am, I only need to reapply at 12pm and it sticks around even after eating and drinking. It smells like sweet vanilla, but on the artificial side (MAC wins here). Overall, this is a dream lip gloss, and at only R129 (compared to MAC’s R280) you should go out and try these butter glosses. They come in 12 beautiful colours.
