The Best Self Tanner for Dry Skin
Right now I’m on the balcony overlooking the sea on my annual family beach vacay. Every year we go to Umhlanga for a bit of sun, sea, sand and bonding time. In preparation for our beach holiday, I always want to look a little brown, because I feel better with a bit of colour.
I’ve literally searched high and low for the best self tanner, ordering online, buying different brands overseas and trying a whole lot of local products. Because my skin is dry, I know that I can’t use solutions with a high alcohol content because that leads to further dryness. I’ve figured out exactly what I need and have found the perfect combination.
I’m a bit tricky when it comes to self tan because of my dry skin. I’m not like a crocodile, but self tan doesn’t look great on dry skin as it comes out patchy. After having read loads of positive reviews about the brand, I decided to order some Fake Bake tanning products. I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot, ladies!
UPPER BODY
For some reason, my upper body isn’t as dry as my lower body, so it needs less moisture. On my upper half I use Fake Bake’s Flawless spray. This spray is the bomb diggity! It’s lightweight, so easy to apply (the colour guide is fab and washes off once you shower) and smells deliciously like coconuts. I simply spritz some on the body mitt provided and apply in circular motions to my arms, torso and back. If you use a mitt to apply your self tan, be sure to put a pair of gloves on first underneath the mitt. Fakebake comes with a mitt and a pair of gloves! Genius. The gloves ensure that the mitt stays in place. Also, no prospect of orange hands. The solution dries in a flash and I can get dressed 20 minutes after I apply it. The next day, the colour is a completely believable gorgeous brown colour. The undertone is green so the colour never looks orange. I love it the most and there’s nothing I don’t like about it. It’s the best tanner I’ve ever used and is officially my HG tanner.
You can buy it here for R470.

LOWER BODY
My lower body (as you know now) is dry come the colder months. Because it has been formulated for dry skin, I chose Fake Bake’s Body Butter. Best decision ever. First off, the body butter looks like chocolate. It’s a thick brown butter that I apply using the gloves provided. I rub it into my legs, starting at my ankles, in circular motions and I’m done. It couldn’t be easier. I finish my feet off using Dove’s Summer Glow Body Lotion because I don’t want tell-tale unbelievably brown feet. The colour is gorgeous, believable and perfect!
Beautifully brown legs can be yours for R357 here.
• Because the gloves provided ultimately give way from wear and tear get yourself a box of gloves from Dis-Chem. They work out cheaper if you buy in bulk versus buying them separately.
• Always, always, always moisturise your elbows, knees and feet before applying self tanner and avoid shaving your legs while you’re rocking your self tan (shaving is like exfoliating and can render your gorgeous glow patchy).
