Everything you ever wanted to know about Eye Shadow Primer

Don’t you hate it when after you lovingly apply your eye shadow in the mornings, you discover at around 3:00 pm that you have a weird line of dark shadow in your crease and your eyelids SO don’t look like they did that morning? This can all be a thing of the past for you if you use an eye shadow primer.

The purpose of an eye shadow primer is to provide a good base for your eye shadow, to keep it vibrant and make sure that it lasts all day long. I tested about 8 different primers, and I’ve found my top 2.

MAC Paint Pot in Painterly

Described as “A highly pigmented eye colour that goes on creamy but dries to an intense, vibrant finish. Long-wearing, colourfast. Creates seamless coverage without weight or caking. Blends smoothly over the lids. Cream-based, can be mixed with M·A·C shadows and liners.”

What I like about it

• It keeps my eye shadow looking fresh all day

•  A pot lasts for quite a long time

What I don’t like:

• It’s quite a thick formula, and can be a bit cakey and make you look a bit frosty eyed if you put too much on. Please don’t EVER use this as concealer. It will make you look like you are one thousand years old.

•  It tends to dry out because of the opening and closing every day

•  That said, you are able to use all of the product because of the jar packaging

Palladio Herbal Eye Shadow Primer

Enhanced with 5 different herbal extracts as well as Vitamins A, C and E, this sheer, silicone-based formula glides on like silk and then vanishes instantly. It’s the ultimate makeup kit accessory, that eliminates creasing and ensures maximum shadow vibrancy all-day long.

What I like about it

• My eye shadow lasts through the day

•  The wand applicator is handy for applying directly on to your lid

•  It’s half the price of higher end brands

What I don’t like:

• It ends up drying out as well, and because of the tube packaging, you can’t get all of the product out.

How to use an eye shadow primer you ask? Just apply a thin layer onto your eyelids (make sure that your eyelids don’t have any eye cream or oil on them) and then simply apply your eye shadow. It’s a simple step that might take you 30 seconds more in your every day makeup routine, but it will help to make your shadow last throughout the day.
