In today’s busy world, where you always have something to do, it’s important to take some time out for yourself to relax. I have the perfect suggestion for a bit of downtime, to refresh and pamper yourself, and it comes in the form of a milk bath!

Cleopatra was said to have exceptionally beautiful skin, and, according to historians, she made use of lots of natural ingredients to achieve this. The ingredients for your relaxing bath can be found in your very own kitchen:

• 4 cups or 1 litre of full cream milk (the skim and low fat kind aren’t as beneficial to the skin)
• 1 cup of honey
Lavender or Rose essential oil
• Candles
To make it even more luxurious, add some rose petals to the water. For another variation, get a muslin bag and fill it with a few chamomile tea bags and some lavender sprigs (the muslin bag acts as a giant tea bag so that you don’t have to scrape up the lavender and chamomile tea bags when you’ve finished ).

Milk baths are amazing for so many reasons. Firstly milk contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy, that dissolves the proteins which hold together dead skin cells, in other words providing a very gentle all-over exfoliation. Secondly, a milk bath will soften your skin because of the vitamins A & D in milk. Lastly, milk baths can help to moisturise the skin because of the fats and proteins found in full cream milk. Adding honey to your milk bath ups the moisturising properties, as honey is a natural humectant which promotes moisture retention. Be sure to soak for a good 15 minutes before you get out.

Light some candles, relax and enjoy!
