Revlon Bold Lacquer Mascara | Beauty Review

I love a good mascara. I don’t know a girl who doesn’t. Because I wasn’t blessed with Bambi-like lashes, I am always looking for the perfect balance of length and thickness that the best of the best mascaras out there promise to deliver.

Having just run out of my Estee Lauder Sumptuous Mascara, and whilst doing a toiletry shop at Clicks last week, I got chatting to a really enthusiastic and knowledgeable beauty lady at Clicks Sandton. She told me all about Revlon’s new Bold Lacquer Mascara by Grow Luscious, and (obviously you know where this is heading) I was so excited to try it out, so I got one. She told me tales of how it lengthens and thickens and I was sold! Unfortunately that was all it was – a tale.

Get Volume + Length to the nth degree. Our first mascara with only high shine black fibers.” – Revlon

First up, let’s start with the name. To me, the word ‘bold’ implies something strong and eye catching. This sentence carries more weight because I’ve bolded it. See what I mean? The word ‘lacquer’ conjures up images of that beautiful shiny sheen that nail polish gives, or a glossy glaze. So assuming that bold is another word for eye-catching, distinct and pronounced, and lacquer means glossy, Revlon falls very short of all of these connotations implied from the name of this mascara.

On application, this mascara gives some volume and a teeny bit of length, but is really nothing to write home about. The first coat is fine, but nowhere near the grand description hinted at by its name. Now if you want more volume (which obviously you do, because one coat just isn’t going to cut it) you land yourself in a tricky situation: if you try to apply a second coat, the mascara clumps like crazy. When I say clumps, I mean all your lashes get stuck together in a clumpy mess, and then there’s nothing you can do! Thick and spidery lashes are not a thing.

The only people this mascara might suit are those of you who like a ‘no-makeup’ makeup look. It will subtly enhance your lashes and help to fake the appearance of slightly thicker, blacker lashes. Because I like my mascara to be a bit bolder, I really didn’t enjoy this mascara and won’t be repurchasing, The only thing I enjoyed about it however is that it is super easy to wash off.

P.S. If you’re wondering if the Grow Luscious part of this mascara’s name means it can help your lashes grow thicker, longer or faster, it can’t. There’s nothing in the fragrance-free formula that will enhance lash growth.
